How To Open Doors

"The obsession with running is really an obsession with the potential for more and more life." - George Sheehan

šŸ¤” A Lesson from the Secret Service

George W Bush, America's 43rd president, was an avid runner. As president, he reportedly ran six days per week. And he was fast. He had a sub-four hour marathon time, and even in office, he would run three miles at a 7 min/mile pace. Any runner knows that's pretty speedy.

Here's what is interesting: do you know who is with the President at all times? Secret service agents.

I remember hearing that the Secret Service had to find agents for the President's detail that could keep pace with the president, in full gear, in 100-degree heat, and do their jobs.

In other words: if you were in the Secret Service and a fast runner, you got promoted to the President's detail. Not a bad day.

Here are some other things I've seen personally:

  • I saw a friend get to speak to thousands of people about an experience she had running an ultramarathon.
  • I met a guy online who used running to drop hundreds of pounds to join the Army.
  • I've solved countless problems on a long run.

In other words, very simply: If you want to open some doors in your life, maybe the next step is to go for a run.

šŸƒšŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø Running At Night

Sometimes, mornings just don't cooperate. And with a jam-packed schedule and family, there might only be one other time to make a run happen: nighttime. My entire training block for my half marathon in March 2023 was done at night. Here are a few tricks:

  • Eat Early - If you're running at 7:30, eat at 5:30. You've got to give your body time to digest.
  • Go Immediately - As soon as you can, get out there. Don't sit down. Don't scroll. Don't watch tv. As soon as your work is done, kids are down, etc, go.
  • Stay Safe - Try to get done before dark. When not possible, stick to roads you know with a phone and bright colored clothes.

Mornings are underestimated as to how much you can get done. So are nights. Use them both well, and it's pretty remarkable what you can get done.

Book Progress - We're. Almost. There. My editor has crushed it, dropping 500+ comments for me to work through. I'll meet with my graphics guy this week. I'm excited to launch soon!

Running Progress - I was laughing with a friend this week that I was closer to my goals at the end of January than I am now. With two rounds of virus that brought on fevers, I'm listening to my body and building back this week. I've got some good plans for the Springtime!
