Friday at Five: Habits, Quality Shoes for Cheap, and John 16

Happy Friday, friends!

The semester is truly underway, and it seems like everyone is busy. I'm using writing as a way to ground myself during the busyness.

What do you do when you're busy to make sure you keep the most important things front and center? Email me back. I love learning from others.

Now on to this week's Friday at Five to help us finish the week well:

šŸ’¬ Nothing's normal until it is. - Habits of the Household

šŸ“š Habits of the Household

If there has been one book that has changed how I operate and parent at home, it is Habits of the Household. This is a simple book about how to create habits that send your family in an intentional direction over a lifetime. Whether you're a parent, spouse, kid... I can't recommend it enough. Pick it up this weekend and see what changes in your family after you read it.

šŸ’¬ One of the most significant things about any household is what is considered to be normal. Moments aggregate, and they become memories and tradition. Our routines become who we are, become the story and culture of our families. - Habits of the Household

One habit that my wife and I are trying to model for our kids is excercising. Whether you're a runner, gym person, or something else, one of the more expensive parts of excercising is the shoes. Everyone I know wears shoes... except for one guy...

I'll burn through three pairs of running shoes this calendar year alone. As such, I had to figure out how to buy quality running shoes at a lower price than $100+ a pop. I just helped my wife do the same thing for gym shoes.

Here's how I do it:
> Go to Amazon
> Search _gender_ _type_ shoes (ex: men's trail running shoes)
> Filter by Shoe Size
> Filter by Amazon Prime
> Filter by max price of $53
> Look for name brands

I've bought all my shoes this way. No, they aren't the trendy name brand Hoka or On Clouds, but they'll be the last year's model shoes from trusted brands that will last for a few hundred miles and take care of my feet without breaking the bank.

šŸ™ John 16

Another habit I participate in regularly is reading the Bible, Journaling, and Prayer. This is a regular piece of my morning. Here's an encouraging set of verses that I thought I'd pass along.

Do you now believe?ā€ Jesus replied. ā€œA time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. ā€œI have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.ā€ - John 16:31-33

In this passage, Jesus:
- Tells us to expect trouble - so we won't be surprised by the trouble
- Not that he is promising to cause trouble (we'll side step that rabbit hole today. Might be worth revisiting later).
- Tells us he overcomes the world - so that even if trouble overcomes us, we know that no trouble has overcome Jesus.
- Hope comes in following the one who has overcome.

That's pretty good news!

Finish your week well!
