It has been a big week.

🏃🏻‍♂️

This weekend, I did a DIY ultramarathon. Given that I've got a baby on the way and just replaced an HVAC, your boy is on a budget. $150 race entries just aren't in the cards right now.

But, I'm a runner.

And I like to run really far.

So, this weekend I mapped out and ran an ultra all by myself. Here are the stats from the day:

  • 40.22 Miles
  • 5,650' of Elevation Gain
  • 9:24:32 Total Elapsed Time | 14:02/mi
  • 151 Average Heart Rate (watch measured)

Here are a few things I thought about, learned, and took away from the experience:

Promises To Yourself Are Important - This run was big for me because I didn't really tell anyone my goal distance other than my wife. I could've quit at 26.2mi, 50k, or 35mi and still gotten all the attention I could ask for. I could've shortcutted. But when you keep promises to yourself, you realize their value and strive to keep them for others.

Know Your Route - I was disoriented on a trail that I've run hundreds of times. If you're going to put in a longer-than-average effort (whatever that means for you), this isn't the time to pick a new trail.

Other People Bring Variety - Gah, my food choices sucked. They were also my favorites. But almost 10 hours of the same flavor of gu, waffle, and drink was terrible. The biggest thing race aid stations bring: variety. You want people in your life, whether it be running or anywhere else, just simply to say and do things you wouldn't think to.

Do Things You're Not Sure You Can Do - This is what keeps me coming back to ultras. The outcome is never guaranteed. When was the last time you did something you weren't sure you could accomplish?

Home Field Advantage - I ran my favorite trail in 8 loops. Four in one direction and four in the other. I PB'ed the 40-mile distance by hours. There is nothing like the home field.

For those who might not know, I've been in the process of writing a book for a few months now. With the draft done and edited, graphics and formatting are what's left before launch. Check out the cover! I'm so excited about where this landed!

Just run one mile... because one mile inevitably turns to two... Then, to three... And before you know it, you're running further than you ever dreamed. See you on the trails! 🤙🏻
